You buy a bulb at the store, put it into a fixture and flip the switch. On comes a light. What could be simpler?

True, many home lighting situations are as easy as that. But if you want to get the most out of your budget, and also to design a more pleasing and practical home environment, a little more thought is useful.

Lighting the bedroom, for example, can be as quick as the scenario described above. But you won’t be getting the maximum value out of your lighting scheme. If you want lighting that offers better reading, with less eye strain, a little designing is needed. If you want to create an elegant atmosphere for evening that is still functional in the morning, a little homework is helpful.

Even when you’re lighting the exterior of the home both esthetic and functional factors come into play. Home security requires careful placement of just the right kind of lights. Motion sensors are a great addition. Decorative accents to make your home look its best have to be carefully selected and optimally placed.

The deck is another opportunity to make your home shine, literally and figuratively. Post lights, recessed lighting and many other options are available to give that often used structure just the right illumination. Whether providing a safe walk along the surface, or a decorative glow along the path to the pool, deck lights can add a stellar look to an otherwise ordinary area.

Indoors, track lighting can perform a similar function, even though using very different means. Highlighting a fine piece of furniture or wall decoration is one popular purpose for track lighting. But they can even add dramatic spots and shadows to dress up an area where no objects reside at all.

Naturally, these design elements can be enhanced by using colored lights. But going one step further to give control over placement and intensity is another way to optimize your lighting design. Movable track lights, dimmer switches and many other forms of control increase the beauty and usefulness of these elements.

When planning all that activity it’s helpful to know a little bit about the various kinds of lamp and fixture. You’ll want to find out about incandescents, CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Lights) and LEDs, along with halogens and other lighting types. That will help you select the look and function you want within the budget you project.

It’s also useful, both for the best results and for safety reasons, to know something about basic electricity. If you confuse a watt with how bright your light is, learn about lumens and color temperature. If you get nervous every time you hear the word voltage, do a little homework and take the edge off.

Lighting is one of the areas of do-it-yourself home projects that don’t take a lot of experience or special tools. A good eye for what looks good, combined with some elementary information, can get you well down the road of creating just the look you want and need.

Good bedroom lighting considers a careful mixture of practical and psychological factors. The average bedroom has so many different uses – relaxation, intimacy, study, morning preparation – that covering them all can be tricky.

We associate the bedroom with, among other things, sleep. That usually means no lights at all. That suggests that turning them off should not be a chore. If you’ve been lying in bed reading it can be inconvenient to turn them off, especially if you’ve grown sleepy. A master switch within easy reach is a great idea here.

That nighttime reading can be a strain on the eyes, leading to fatigue and headaches. Banish the problem by installing lights in the proper places with the correct color.

Color? Does that mean you should get pink or blue light bulbs? No. Color, here, means ‘color temperature’. Good reading lights are designed to emulate the range of wavelengths given off by natural sunlight, which is determined in part by the temperature of the sun’s surface. Humans’ eyes evolved to be sharpest under those conditions. Getting bulbs and lamps labeled as close to that will provide comfortable reading conditions.

But sometimes, you just want a pleasant ambiance, not a practical light. That, too, should be taken into consideration when designing the bedroom lighting scheme.

Select and place lamps about a foot higher than where your eyes are, and allow them to reflect light off surfaces. That provides the well-known indirect light effect that gives a subdued atmosphere. Whether for romance or just a quiet time away from distractions, that produces a calming effect that is just right in the bedroom.

Morning time is when most people, both kids and adults, will be up and preparing to meet the day. But, depending on the time of the day and season of the year, the sun doesn’t always cooperate to provide the illumination needed. The orientation of the house plays a role, too, as do any curtains, exterior overhangs and so forth.

To provide a cheery atmosphere that also provides needed light to tie shoes, connect a tricky clasp, brush hair or do any other common task, place lamps appropriately. Here again keep the light above the eyes, but let it shine directly down. Raising it too high creates deep shadows that can hinder makeup application, make clothing color judgment more difficult and so on. Too low and it shines in your eyes, making those tasks harder. Choose a pleasing middle level.

For overall illumination – for entering the room, vacuuming and a hundred other common tasks – a broad ambient lighting scheme is needed. A central fixture with a strong lamp and a diffusing cover is often just the thing. For other bedroom designs supplemental lighting fixtures will be needed. There are often lots of corners, nooks and other areas of a bedroom that can have deep shadows.

For all of the above applications a dimmer switch, or at least multi-level bulbs, can allow for finer control of light and shadow. They can also allow for some small electricity savings if the light stays on for extended periods. A 300-watt halogen bulb can contribute a chunk to the monthly bill. Dimming it when lower illumination is enough slices that down.

Consider all the ways you use your bedroom and light accordingly.

Studio lighting has emerged as in important and indispensable concept. The significance of studio lighting can be understood in the context of its various uses and numerous functions.
Studio Lighting is used, as the name suggests, in studios, for the purpose of photography and filming. The photographer often uses a strobe in order to be able to regulate the light falling on the subject.

The light is so directed that it falls from the bright light strobe onto the white umbrella from where it gets reflected upon the subject.

This process helps in creating a softer look and reduces the degree of stark harshness of the white light. The concept of studio lighting can be explained in two categories, each of which is formulated on the basis of an individual manner of working.

The first category of studio lighting is that of Continuous light, while the second category of studio lighting is known as that of Flash light. Each of these two categories are known to have specific advantages and disadvantages.

In this article we will primarily touch upon the advantages and disadvantages of Continuous light. The concept of Continuous light entails two significant advantages which contribute greatly to the popularity in its usage and widespread demand.

These two advantages are responsible for popularizing the concept of Continuous light in studio lighting systems. The primary benefit of using Continuous lighting is that Continuous light is very inexpensive and hence it proves to be extremely cost effective and economical.

For those who are simply beginning in the field of production or cinematography or and industry making use of a studio lighting system, the restraints of working on a controlled budget can be met by using Continuous lights.

The second main advantage of Continuous light is that it is easy to adjust the lighting as per the needs of the user. This is possible because while using Continuous light it is easy to discern between the lighted portions and the areas in the shadows and hence controlling the effects of the light becomes an easy task. However, there are certain disadvantages of Continuous light as well.

One of these drawbacks is the fact that Continuous light produces a greater level of heat in comparison to the levels of light energy that it produces. As a greater amount of heat and lesser amount of light is produced, the concept is not entirely efficient.

Also, the heat that is produced is known to make the photographer and the models uncomfortable and hence adds to strenuous working conditions. Another disadvantage is in the fact that Continuous light causes the irises of the models’ eyes to close down, and while conducting a photo shoot with a specific emphasis on portraits, this can result in unsatisfactory pictures.

Photography requires an environment in which the models can maintain the desired “look” and the use of Continuous light is known to cause significant hindrance to this task. However, these problems can be resolved by employing the use of certain techniques and even by simple practices such as taking breaks between shots. There are three kinds of lights used in the photo shoots. These are the Key light, the Fill light and the Background light.
