More and more homes today have a separate area or even an entire room of the house dedicated to home entertainment. Extensive stereos and home theater systems have become common. Lighting the areas where they reside presents interesting challenges.

Images on large HDTV or projection TVs look best when the lighting scheme is done right. The most obvious guideline is to avoid creating any glare off the screen, shoving light into the eyes of those viewing it. That suggests putting the lights behind the TV. But that introduces the possibility of having them shine directly into the viewers’ eyes.

There are many ways out of the dilemma.

Track lighting is a typical and very effective method. A row of focused lights pointed at the wall can bounce light into the room. That lights the area, but diffuses the result to achieve a good balance of the need for illumination versus avoiding glare. Track lights come in a hundred styles, suitable for every decorating need. But ensure that you place and use them correctly in order to avoid a number of possible drawbacks.

High wattage incandescent track light bulbs can produce high heat. Apart from the chance of harming the track light fixture, a problem easily solved by using the recommended wattage, an incandescent can dry out paint quickly. That produces peeling and discoloration. Halogen bulbs, in combination with a dimmer, can create the right illumination, but they may still produce the same effects if left on for long periods. Consider LEDs.

LEDs will provide a bright spot from each bulb but consume very little electricity by comparison to other types. They cost a bit more up front, but they last practically forever. Many will illuminate for 10 years or more. That makes them efficient and low cost over the long run.

Accent lights provide another key element of the lighting design for the home entertainment section of the home. That all-important ‘movie theater’ look that enhances the mood is best achieved with accent lights.

Look at what’s on the walls the next time you go to a smaller movie theater, one that seats about 50 people, say. Some fixtures are rather dull, others are elegant. But they all give an indirect lighting effect that helps create the right atmosphere.

Equipment will look better when accent lights are used correctly, too. Good home theater systems and stereos can run into thousands of dollars. That’s not just electronics to produce images and sound. That’s furniture, and high-end furniture at that. It deserves the best lighting to enhance that stylish look the designers spent such effort creating.

Keep accent lights directed away from the eyes. Direct them onto equipment when you want to create a spotlight effect to emulate a showroom. Angle them away from the gear when you want to create dramatic looking shadows. In either case, make sure the placement doesn’t interfere with the ability to use the controls. Accents shouldn’t overwhelm the effect of task lighting and you won’t always use the remote.

Provide your home entertainment area with good lighting and you’ll create a practical scheme with just the right mood for eating popcorn or sipping that glass of wine while you enjoy the show.

Xenon Lamps are primarily classified into two categories. These two categories are the Xenon Arc Lamp and the Xenon Flash Lamp. In this article we shall discuss some of the characteristics and the functioning of these two categories of Xenon lamps. First we shall talk about the Xenon Arc Lamp.
The Xenon Arc Lamp is a source of artificial light. The Xenon Arc Lamp works on the power provided by electricity. Ionized xenon gas is utilized in the Xenon Arc Lamp for generating a brilliant white light which bears a resemblance to natural daylight.

Xenon Arc Lamps can be classified into two sub categories: the Continuous Output Xenon Short Arc lamps and Continuous Output Xenon Long Arc Lamps. Both these categories consist of an arc tube which is made out of glass or fused quartz. At each end of this tube are located metal electrodes made out of tungsten. The glass tube is initially emptied and then once again filled with xenon gas.

Xenon Arc Lamps were first produced in Germany in the 1940s. They were introduced into the markets in 1951 by Osram. There are two distinct varieties of Xenon lamps on the basis of the gas being utilized. The first category makes use of only pure Xenon gas. The second category makes use of a mixture of xenon and small quantities of mercury.

Xenon Arc Lamps make use of a low voltage Direct Current. They have a negative temperature coefficient. In 1991 the introduction of xenon headlamps in cars led to the widespread use of xenon lamps. In xenon long arc lamps the tube of glass is elongated and hence the arc is longer. Let us now discuss the workings of the Xenon Flash Lamps.

Xenon Flash Lamps discharge an electric glow. The lamps are designed in such a manner that they are able to produce intense, often disjointed portions of white light for limited periods of time. Xenon Flash Lamps consist of a sealed tube which is most often constructed out of fused quartz. The sealed tube consists of a mixture of gases. Out of these gases, the largest portion is that of the Xenon gas.

There are electrodes which work at carrying the electric current to the mixture of gases. A requirement of Xenon Flash Lamps is a source of power with high voltage. This high voltage power source is used to energize the mixture of gases. A capacitor with charge is used for the purpose of providing energy to the gaseous mixture. The tube which is mostly made out of glass can be straight or can also be built by bending it in a variety of other shapes. Some of the common shapes are the helical shape, the “U” shaped tube and the circular shape.

There are electrodes projecting out of both ends of the tube. The capacitor is charged with a relatively high current of 250 to 2000 volts. A flash of light is begun by ionizing the mixture of gases and further amplified by transferring a great amount of current through the ionized gas.

Table Lamps

Table Lamps have been in use since time immemorial. In the ancient times, they were used with candles, with pretty overheads so that your walls were lit up with beautiful shapes. Since the invention of the bulb, lamps have become so commonplace; they are used all over the place, in every home.
Lamps lend certain elegance to a room which cannot be matched by anything else. The huge variety of lamps is a great plus as well. One can find shades of nearly every imaginable color, to fit any surrounding. With the advent of low cost and low consumption bulbs like CFL, lamps have become even more commonplace and can be afforded by everyone.

Table lamps are the most convenient of all. They are used on all kinds of tables, whether it is at the dinner table, in the guest area, or even the little lamp next to your bed. It’s a easy way to get a little light easily whenever you need it.

Table lamps come in many shapes and sizes. Best part is, you don’t even need to buy branded lamps to look good! Table lamps provide elegance, character and grace to a room. It relaxes you, and brings you into a calmer frame of mind. Aren’t we all pleased to enter a room that is lit softly by the dull and effervescent glow of a beautiful lamp?

There are many different types of table lamps. There are brass lamps, antique lamps, modern lamps and many other varieties. The trick is choosing one which fits your home. If you can get a lamp which suits your surrounding, rest assured, you will need little else to light up and invigorate the area.

Brass lamps are a great way to go for the traditional look. A well-polished brass lamp always manages to be the center of attraction for an area. It really sets the mood of a room and though slightly expensive, they are an excellent choice if you have a no holds barred approach.

Antique lamps are also a great way to lend a touch of mystery to your room. Antique pieces always fascinate visitors, and they will be left oooh-aaahing at your delectable antique table lamp. Antique table lamps are hard to find, and one needs to go through many contacts before one finds the lamp which suits your needs. One also must be very careful of buying antiques, which are not really antiques. Always verify the credentials of the seller before you go in for such an expensive buy like this.

Also, along with table lamps, One can choose from a variety of Lamp shades, of various colors and designs and make the effect of light from the table lamp even more intense and beautiful.

Choosing a table lamp isn’t that big a deal, but a little care does need to be taken. You just need to be well versed in what you want, and you need to ask your self a few questions like: what is the ambiance of the area? What is the kind of size I am looking for? Where am I going to put the lamp?

After you’ve considered all these questions, and narrowed down your selection, try visualizing the concerned lamps in the area you have selected for it. Try to go with more than one person who are familiar with the place where you are going to keep it so you have multiple opinions on whether it is the right choice for you.

You should be on your way

LED Lamp:

LED lamps are the new generation lamps which have LED’s or Light emitting Diodes as their light source instead of any gas or electrical filaments. These Lamps make use of the concept of Solid state Lightning, and hence fall into one of the categories of Solid State lightning Lamps.

LED Lamps are also called as Bars or Illuminators. LED lamps are generally a number of Light emitting diodes, packed together to perform the function of emission of light.

LED lamps come in various shapes, designs and sizes.

Some examples of the common LED Lamps are:

1)Small Edison lamp

2) Bayonet bulbs , etc.

Most of the LED lamps require low voltage, and work appropriately in the normal household supply of electricity. (120-240 V AC )

LED lamps, as compared to Neon lamps, are a better source of Illumination. They last longer than the Neon lamps and require lesser voltage to run on.

Earlier, many different types of LED’s were in use. For example, infra-red, yellow, green, red and orange LED’s were greatly in use till the 1990′s, when Blue, indigo and violet LED’s replaced them.

A single LED, individually is of no use. It can not provide ample light to be used as an illuminator, nor can it be used to produce even the Visible spectra of light. Hence a large number of LED’s are required to make an LED lamp. Also, sometimes, LED’s are used along with metals such as Yellow phosphor, etc. to produce the desired lights of suitable wavelength.

Two or more different colored LED’s can be combined in a lamp to produce white light.

LED’s have very low internal resistance of their own. They mostly act as negative resistances to the source, and hence withdraw a large amount of current from the source. This either leads to the destruction of the LED or the destruction of the source. Hence ballasts, or positive resistances are required in series in the circuits containing LED’s or LED lamps in order to prevent them from destroying themselves and maintain a smooth functioning.

LED Lights and lamps are better than the traditional incandescent lamps because of a lot of reasons:

1) In Incandescent lights, 98% of the electric energy supplied is wasted in the form of Heat.
Whereas in LED lamps, most of the electric energy is used to produce Light. Hence LED lamps help to save electricity and energy.

2) LED’s come in various colors other than the traditional white and yellow colors.

3) They provide a very high and bright intensity of light, 100 Lumen per watt approximately which is better than most of the lighting systems.

4) They are very durable as compared to incandescent lights, as they do not have any tubes or filaments which can get broken.

5) Average life span of a LED light is about 7000 hours, which is 7 times the life of an incandescent bulb.

6) LED’s lamps are fully dimmable. Unlike fluorescent lights, LED support dimming fully and can be connected to a dimming device easily.

7) LED lamps do not have Mercury, like most fluorescent lamps and other HID bulbs. Hence the chances of pollution through mercury are also reduced.
Hence, these days, LED lights and Lamps are the best to use. LED lighting technology is currently the best available in the market today.

Light Shade:

Light shades are also known as Lamp shades. Light shade is an equipment which is attached to bulbs and lamps. Its is a decorative piece, which is hollow from one end, and can be put around a bulb or lamp. It can be made up of a colored glass, or any other material which changes the color, brightness and intensity of light, and makes it pleasant to look. Light shades are fixed on top of Lamp bulbs, or they are used to cover bulbs in order to diffuse the light being emitted from the source.

The Light shades were also used in historic times for decorative purposes and have remained in our culture since then.

They are available in many shapes and sizes, some being: Cylindrical, Conical, etc. They can have different styles and designs. Some Shades may be simple table lamps, or some may be a shade over a hanging bulb to produce a hanging shades.

There are some light shades which are so big, that they can completely surround the chandelier’s hung in large rooms and halls, and provide a unique light which is a complementary to the light passing through it.

Some light shades can be one way mirror, reflecting everything from the outside surface and enclosing the chandelier from the inside. Such Shades are made up of semi transparent mirror strip, surrounding a chandelier or lamp.

One can see the beauty of the mixed colors of light emanating from the chandelier and the light shade, once the light is turned on.

Light shades of various types and designs can be found in the market today. They can be oval, cylindrical, cubical, or of any geometric figure. Some shades are in the form of Lamps. A small bulb is attached to a rod, and a beautiful bell like light shade, in the form of lamp lies surrounding the bulb. Such shades are mostly metallic, like of Aluminum or Copper, and provide the proper reflection of light, as desired by the people.

There are many types of Light shades which can be bought today. They are:
1) Fabric Shades: They are those types of lamp shades which are made up of Fabrics. Light emitting from such shades is a bit dim, than the actual light.

2) Glass Shades: As the name suggests, these Shades are made up of glass, and cause greater refraction of light, and hence these shades emit bright light.

These shades are gaining popularity very quickly in the interior House Designing field, and are mostly being used for decorative and Aesthetic purposes.
